Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has drawn international attention for his aggressive enforcement of food-safety regulations, with The New York Times featuring him prominently on its front page.

The newspaper described Mundhe as a “rock star” in a report examining his growing popularity among diners and the apprehension he has generated among restaurant operators.

The front-page headline read, “In India, a Food Inspector Is a Rock Star”, accompanied by the strapline, “Diners revere him and owners fear him.”

In its detailed report, The New York Times referred to Mundhe as a “food safety celebrity” and explored how his high-profile inspections have transformed him into a recognisable public figure in Maharashtra.

Who Is Tukaram Mundhe?

Mundhe, an IAS officer known for his strict administrative style, has been serving as Maharashtra’s FDA commissioner since earlier this year.

He has gained a reputation for conducting surprise inspections of restaurants, food outlets, warehouses and other establishments involved in the sale or storage of food products.

His enforcement campaign has brought several prominent food businesses under the scanner, while also making food hygiene a prominent topic among consumers.

Mundhe is also popularly referred to as “IAS Singham”, a nickname linked to his reputation for taking a tough approach during enforcement drives.

Restaurants, Food Businesses Face FDA Action

Since Mundhe took charge, the Maharashtra FDA has conducted a series of inspections that resulted in temporary closures and suspension of licences at establishments where officials reported violations.

Major food chains have also faced action.

Outlets of Domino’s and Pizza Hut were temporarily shut following inspections in which officials reportedly found issues including cockroaches and expired food products.

Some long-established food businesses in Mumbai were also subjected to temporary licence suspensions following inspections by the department.

The enforcement campaign has extended beyond conventional restaurants.

FDA teams have inspected quick-commerce warehouses, commonly known as dark stores, operated by companies including Blinkit and Zepto. Officials reportedly found several food-safety violations during some of these inspections, including the presence of pests and expired products.

From Food Inspector To Public Figure

The inspections have helped turn Mundhe into a widely recognised figure beyond the government and food industry.

Restaurant operators have faced regulatory action where violations were detected, while many consumers have welcomed the inspections as a response to concerns about hygiene standards.

His visibility has also grown through coverage of the raids and inspections, with videos and reports about his enforcement drives attracting public attention.

The New York Times report has now brought further international focus to Mundhe and Maharashtra’s food-safety enforcement campaign, highlighting the unusual popularity he has gained in a role that typically operates away from the public spotlight.
