The Maldives, renowned for its stunning beaches, has banned Israeli tourists in response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. In retaliation, Israel has advised its citizens to avoid the Maldives and suggested that those already there consider leaving.
Amid rising tensions, the Israeli Embassy's social media is highlighting the beauty of Indian beaches, promoting destinations like Goa and Kerala as alternatives for Israeli tourists. "Since the Maldives is no longer welcoming Israelis, here are some beautiful and amazing Indian beaches where Israeli tourists are warmly welcomed and treated with utmost hospitality," the Embassy of Israel tweeted on Monday.
In a potentially provocative move, the Israeli Embassy also shared a photo of a beach in Lakshadweep. This region has previously been a point of contention for Maldivians, especially after Maldivian ministers made derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit there, which sparked outrage in India and calls to boycott the Maldives as a tourist destination.
The Maldivian tourism sector, heavily reliant on international visitors, could feel the impact of this ban. Israeli tourist numbers have already plummeted by 88% compared to last year, and the recent drop in Indian tourists has added to the strain.
The ban on Israeli passport holders appears to be a response to public anger over the Gaza conflict and pressure from opposition parties. President Mohamed Muizzu has formed a subcommittee to enforce the ban and has launched a national fundraising campaign, "Maldivians in Solidarity with Palestine," to support the Palestinian cause.
