Mamata Banerjee Targets Narendra Modi Over Voter Roll Row Ahead of Bengal Polls
Mamata Banerjee launched a sharp attack on the Centre during an Eid gathering, linking voter list revisions to alleged attempts to influence elections
21-03-2026West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee intensified her criticism of Narendra Modi on Saturday, accusing the central government of interfering in the state’s electoral process ahead of upcoming polls.
Speaking at a public event during Eid celebrations, Banerjee alleged that the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls was part of a broader strategy to impact election outcomes. She claimed that large-scale deletions from voter lists were aimed at depriving genuine citizens of their voting rights.
The Chief Minister also strongly pushed back against allegations of illegal immigration being a major issue in the state, a narrative frequently raised by the BJP leadership, including Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. She countered by accusing the Centre of politicising the matter for electoral gain.
According to official data, the recent revision of electoral rolls led to the removal of millions of names, while several others remain under scrutiny. The development has become a key political flashpoint, with the ruling Trinamool Congress alleging that minority communities are being disproportionately affected.
Responding to Banerjee’s remarks, BJP leaders criticised her statements, saying such comments reflect political anxiety ahead of the elections and questioning her use of strong language against the Prime Minister.
West Bengal is set to vote in two phases later this month, with results expected in early May. The contest is shaping up to be a high-stakes battle, with both sides sharpening their attacks over issues ranging from governance to voter eligibility.
