Meta Announces Layoffs Across Instagram, WhatsApp, and Reality Labs
Meta has implemented layoffs across key teams, including Instagram and WhatsApp, as part of a strategic move to reallocate resources and align with long-term goals
17-10-2024Meta has recently carried out layoffs across multiple teams, including those working on Instagram, WhatsApp, and Reality Labs, as part of a company-wide resource reallocation effort. According to a report by TechCrunch, these cuts have affected employees in various departments, such as Threads, recruiting, legal operations, and design.
Dave Arnold, a Meta spokesperson, explained that the company is adjusting its teams to better align with long-term strategic objectives. He noted that some employees are being moved to new roles or different locations, while others are facing job cuts. In situations where positions are eliminated, Meta aims to help affected employees by exploring other opportunities within the company. Arnold emphasized that these changes are necessary to ensure Meta's resources are used effectively in support of its future plans, as shared in a statement to The Verge.
Although the exact number of layoffs remains unclear, some impacted employees have shared their experiences online. Jane Manchun Wong, a tech insider, announced on Threads that her position was affected. Another former employee, interviewed by TechCrunch, mentioned that more than a dozen team members were laid off via video call, with some receiving six weeks of severance.
Meta’s recent workforce reductions follow previous rounds of layoffs as the company adjusts after its pandemic-era hiring surge. In 2022, Meta cut around 13% of its workforce, or about 11,000 employees, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg taking responsibility. In 2023, the company announced another 10,000 layoffs as part of Zuckerberg’s “year of efficiency” initiative.
Tech layoffs have been widespread in 2024, driven by economic challenges and a shift towards AI and cost-saving measures. Major tech firms like Intel, Cisco, and IBM have also made significant cuts, with Intel reducing 15% of its workforce to tackle revenue issues. By August, over 136,000 tech employees across 422 companies had been laid off. Many organizations are now focusing their resources on AI, cybersecurity, and other emerging technologies, leading to a reshaping of roles and further layoffs across the sector.
