Meta Increases Executive Bonuses Amid Layoffs, Sparking Controversy
Meta raises executive bonuses to 200% of base salaries just days after laying off 3,600 employees, drawing criticism
24-02-2025Just a week after letting go of 3,600 employees, Meta has decided to significantly increase the bonuses for its top executives. According to a recent corporate filing, the company has raised executive bonuses to 200% of their base salaries, a substantial jump from the previous 75%.
The decision was formally approved on February 13, 2025, by Meta’s Compensation, Nominating, and Governance Committee (CNGC). However, the revised bonus structure does not apply to CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Meta justified the change by stating that its executive compensation was lagging behind industry benchmarks, as reported by Moneycontrol.
The company’s board explained that prior to the adjustment, the "target total cash compensation" for its executives ranked at or below the 15th percentile when compared to similar roles at other leading tech firms. With the new structure in place, Meta claims its executive pay now aligns more closely with the 50th percentile of its peer group.
Meta defended the decision, emphasizing that competitive compensation is essential to retaining top leadership. However, the timing of the announcement has sparked backlash, as it follows the company’s recent layoffs affecting approximately 5% of its global workforce. While Meta attributed the job cuts to "low performance," many employees and industry analysts have questioned the justification, particularly in light of the increased executive payouts.
Despite the downsizing, Meta is actively expanding its footprint in India, especially in Bengaluru. The company is currently hiring for 41 engineering roles in the city, with a focus on software development, machine learning, and chip design for its data centers.
Over the past month, Meta has listed multiple job openings on LinkedIn, signaling its intent to establish a robust engineering hub in India. The company is also searching for an "experienced Engineering Director" to lead its India-based team, a position Meta describes as crucial for defining its technical direction in the region.
Unlike Meta’s offices in Hyderabad, Gurgaon, New Delhi, and Mumbai—which are primarily engaged in non-engineering functions—the Bengaluru office is set to become a major technology center. It will play a key role in supporting Meta’s Enterprise Engineering team, which develops internal tools rather than consumer-facing platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
