In an uncommon public moment that drew attention across political circles, Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi exchanged greetings and appeared to have a cordial discussion at the Parliament complex on Saturday.
Both leaders had gathered at Prerna Sthal to honour 19th-century reformer Jyotiba Phule on the occasion of his birth anniversary. A video circulating on social media showed Gandhi standing with several senior leaders, including Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Minister JP Nadda, and Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, when the prime minister arrived.
After greeting those present, Modi briefly moved along the line of leaders before turning back to personally acknowledge Gandhi. The two were then seen speaking for a few moments, with others joining the interaction.
The exchange stood out given the often sharp political rivalry between the ruling BJP and the Congress party, with both leaders frequently trading criticism in Parliament and on campaign platforms. The visuals of their interaction were widely shared online.
Remembering Jyotiba Phule
Born on April 11, 1827, in Maharashtra, Phule is remembered for his pioneering work in advancing social equality, women’s education, and the rights of marginalised communities. He passed away in 1890.
In a message posted on social media, Modi paid tribute to Phule’s enduring legacy, praising his efforts to promote education and social justice. Gandhi also acknowledged Phule’s lifelong struggle against discrimination and inequality, highlighting his role in shaping India’s social reform movement.
