Modi Becomes India’s Longest-Serving Elected Leader, Enters 25th Year in Office
Narendra Modi sets a new record in Indian politics, surpassing all predecessors in continuous leadership tenure
23-03-2026Prime Minister Narendra Modi has created a new benchmark in Indian political history by becoming the longest-serving head of an elected government in the country.
With a combined tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat and Prime Minister, he has crossed 8,931 days in office, overtaking the previous record held by Pawan Kumar Chamling, who governed Sikkim for 8,930 days. The achievement marks Modi’s entry into his 25th year in public leadership.
This milestone highlights an extended period of political continuity, reflecting his long-standing presence in governance at both state and national levels.
Modi’s journey in public office began in 2001 when he took charge as Gujarat’s Chief Minister, a role he held for over 13 years before transitioning to national leadership in 2014. Since then, he has served as Prime Minister for three consecutive terms, securing electoral victories in 2014, 2019 and 2024.
Over the years, he has also set multiple records, including being the longest-serving Chief Minister of Gujarat and the Prime Minister with the most extensive prior experience at the state level. He is notably the first Indian Prime Minister born after Independence and among the few to secure repeated mandates with a full majority.
Beyond governance, Modi has also established a strong digital footprint. His presence across social media platforms continues to grow, making him one of the most-followed global leaders. He has crossed 30 million subscribers on YouTube, while his Instagram following has surpassed 100 million. On X, his follower count exceeds 106 million.
The combination of political longevity and digital reach underscores his sustained influence both within India and internationally.
