23-03-2026Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a high-level meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to evaluate India’s preparedness amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia and its potential impact on essential supplies.
The CCS, the country’s top body on strategic and security matters, conducted a comprehensive review of the availability of key resources, including food, fuel and energy. Officials assessed both immediate and long-term strategies to minimise disruptions caused by the evolving geopolitical situation.
Highlighting the global implications of the conflict, the Prime Minister stressed the need to protect citizens from any adverse effects and ensure stability in supply chains.
To maintain energy security, the government decided to keep sufficient coal reserves at thermal power plants to avoid any electricity shortages. Discussions were also held on reducing dependence on limited sources by diversifying imports across sectors such as petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and other industries.
Ensuring adequate fertiliser availability was another priority area, aimed at safeguarding agricultural output and food security. The government also explored alternative sourcing options to strengthen long-term resilience in this sector.
In addition, the meeting touched upon expanding India’s export footprint by identifying new international markets for domestic goods, as part of a broader economic strategy.
According to an official statement, the Cabinet Secretary presented a detailed overview of the global scenario and outlined measures already implemented, along with future plans across ministries. The review covered multiple sectors, including agriculture, energy, MSMEs, trade, shipping and finance, alongside an assessment of the broader macroeconomic outlook.
To ensure coordinated action, the Prime Minister directed the formation of a dedicated group of ministers and senior officials to monitor developments and respond to emerging challenges linked to the conflict.
The CCS meeting was attended by senior leaders including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
