Prime Minister Narendra Modi завершed a two-day official visit to Malaysia on February 7–8, 2026, marking a significant step forward in India–Malaysia relations. During the trip, Modi and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim held high-level discussions in Putrajaya, focusing on expanding collaboration in trade, defence, semiconductor technology, digital innovation, energy security, and other emerging sectors.
As part of the visit, both countries signed 11 cooperation agreements spanning areas such as disaster response, public health, environmental conservation, and wildlife protection — including initiatives aimed at preserving big cat species.
A major highlight of the visit was Modi’s engagement with Malaysia’s large Indian-origin community. He attended a grand cultural celebration featuring traditional performances that fused Malaysian artistic styles with Indian heritage, including storytelling inspired by the Ramayana. The event also showcased large-scale dance performances, devotional music, and community-led cultural presentations.
Modi announced the establishment of a Thiruvalluvar Centre at Universiti Malaya to promote Tamil language and classical literature, along with the introduction of new scholarship opportunities for Malaysian students to study in India. He also met a veteran of the Indian National Army, paying tribute to the shared historical ties between the two nations.
Additionally, India confirmed plans to open a new consulate in Sabah, further strengthening diplomatic and people-to-people connections in the region.
The visit reinforced India’s strategic presence in Southeast Asia while opening new pathways for economic, educational, cultural, and technological cooperation between the two countries.
