Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a recent phone conversation with former US President Donald Trump, clarified that the United States played no role in negotiating the ceasefire between India and Pakistan last month. He also asserted that no talks on a trade agreement between India and the US took place during the military tensions.

This marked the first direct communication between the two leaders since India initiated Operation Sindoor on May 7. The call occurred just before Trump’s scheduled meeting with Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir.

Trump had previously stated that he helped bring about the ceasefire, claiming pressure from the US—particularly trade threats—had influenced both countries. India has strongly denied these assertions, maintaining that the truce was arranged bilaterally at Pakistan’s request.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri revealed that the 35-minute call was initiated by Trump. Modi used the opportunity to brief him on Operation Sindoor, stressing that India’s response was targeted, proportionate, and avoided escalation.

The operation was launched in response to a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam and involved Indian forces dismantling terror hideouts and targeting key Pakistani military sites. A ceasefire was reached three days later.

"At no stage during the episode was there any exchange between India and the US about a trade pact or American mediation efforts," Misri said, reiterating that the dialogue leading to the ceasefire was managed entirely through established military communication channels between India and Pakistan.

A planned meeting between Modi and Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit had to be cancelled after Trump abruptly returned to the US due to rising tensions in the Middle East.
