Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an unannounced visit to the Adampur airbase in Punjab on Tuesday morning, sending a strong visual and strategic message to India’s adversaries. Among the images released from the visit, one stood out prominently — it showed the Prime Minister greeting Indian Air Force personnel, with an MiG-29 fighter jet and a fully operational S-400 air defence system clearly visible behind him.
This single image effectively undercut Pakistan’s recent claims that a strike by its JF-17 fighter jet had destroyed the S-400 system stationed at Adampur. By standing at the very location Pakistan had claimed to have hit, PM Modi not only refuted the misinformation but also showcased his unwavering focus on national defence.
The Prime Minister’s early-morning stop at Adampur — India’s second-largest airbase — came a day after he issued a stern statement warning Pakistan that India had merely paused its operations targeting terror camps and military installations across the border. During his visit, Modi interacted with IAF personnel involved in intercepting recent drone and missile attacks from Pakistan.
"It was a very special experience to be with those who epitomise courage, determination and fearlessness. India is eternally grateful to our armed forces for everything they do for our nation," he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Pakistan’s Disinformation Unravelled
Following India's recent military response under "Operation Sindoor", Pakistan launched aerial attacks on Adampur using drones and missiles. However, the attempts were unsuccessful — India's Russian-built S-400 air defence system intercepted the projectiles before they could reach their targets.
With its direct assault failing, Pakistan launched a digital offensive. It circulated a manipulated satellite image online, claiming the S-400 system at Adampur had been destroyed. The photo showed nothing more than an unmarked patch of earth, lacking any visible damage, such as craters or debris. Fact-checkers and social media users were quick to call out the falsehood.
The official images shared by PM Modi during his visit further confirmed the baselessness of the claim. The visuals clearly displayed an undamaged airbase, runway, and equipment.
As the photos went viral, political leaders and analysts applauded the Prime Minister’s bold move. Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar wrote, "PM Modi walks into Adampur airbase, the very site Pakistan falsely claimed was 'destroyed'. Just the Prime Minister standing tall with our heroes – reality silencing propaganda."
Another user commented, “Pakistan’s attempt to claim damage to the S-400 system has completely fallen apart. The truth is now clear to everyone.”
Adampur’s Strategic Significance
The Adampur airbase has long been a cornerstone of India’s northern defence. Located about 100 kilometers from the Pakistan border, it played a critical role during the 1965 Indo-Pak war and has remained a top priority target for Pakistan’s military ever since.
Despite being a major target in past conflicts, Adampur has consistently withstood enemy attacks. It has been home to powerful aircraft such as the Su-7 and MiG-21 in earlier decades, and today hosts squadrons of MiG-29s and Su-30 MKIs. In 2022, the base became one of the first to receive deployment of the state-of-the-art S-400 air defence system.
With advanced radar and surveillance capabilities, Adampur is a key military hub tasked with protecting northern states including Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, and parts of Rajasthan.
