Mihir Shah, the accused in the Mumbai BMW hit-and-run case, confessed to the crime during police questioning, expressing that his career was ruined by the incident, according to sources. Shah also admitted to consuming alcohol at two different bars before the crash.
On July 7, Shah's BMW collided with a two-wheeler in Worli, resulting in the death of 45-year-old Kaveri Nakhwa, who was riding pillion. Shah was apprehended on Tuesday after evading arrest for nearly three days.
The investigation revealed that Shah had been heavily drinking on the day of the incident. He first consumed alcohol at a bar in Juhu while partying with friends, then drank again at another bar between Borivali and Malad. Shah later insisted on driving the BMW himself, sources disclosed.
Mihir Shah, son of Rajesh Shah, a leader of the Shiv Sena's Eknath Shinde faction, was enjoying a joyride on Marine Drive when the accident occurred. On the night of his arrest, police took both Shah and the BMW driver, Rajrishi Bidawat, to Worli to recreate the crime scene.
Authorities remain skeptical of the statements given by both accused and are verifying their accounts. Shah's reckless driving led to the death of Kaveri Nakhwa, while her husband Pradeep survived with injuries. Despite being aware that Kaveri was caught under the car, Shah continued driving, ignoring motorists' frantic signals and shouts to stop.
The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras at Mela Junction and Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk in Worli. After crossing the junction, other motorists again urged Shah to halt, but he continued driving.
Police plan to confront Bidawat and Shah to uncover the full sequence of events. Shah had attempted to disguise himself by shaving his beard and trimming his hair, and authorities are investigating whether he received assistance in changing his appearance.
Mihir Shah, currently in police custody until July 16, claims to possess a driving license, though it has yet to be recovered. His father, Rajesh Shah, is also implicated in the case and is out on bail.
