Naomi Osaka was overcome with emotion after securing her first victory at the US Open since 2021. The former champion made a triumphant return to Flushing Meadows, defeating Jelena Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open winner, in the opening round of the 2024 US Open. This victory marked Osaka's first top-10 win in four years at the prestigious New York tournament. As a two-time US Open champion, with her Grand Slam titles won in 2018 and 2020, Osaka had been absent from last year's tournament due to the birth of her daughter, Shai. Watching the tournament from the stands reignited her competitive spirit, although she admitted to doubts about her readiness to return to the hard court after maternity leave.

Fighting back tears, Osaka shared her emotional experience. "I was trying not to cry when I walked out. Last year, I watched Coco play, and I wanted so badly to be on these courts again. I didn’t know if I could do it—if I was physically ready. Winning this match and being in this atmosphere means so much to me. Thank you."

Dressed in a striking green outfit adorned with bows, Osaka unleashed a powerful display against the tournament's No. 10 seed, Ostapenko. She delivered 19 winners, including nine aces, and kept her errors to a minimum with just five unforced mistakes.

Balancing motherhood and a Grand Slam competition has been a new challenge for Osaka, who gave birth to her daughter in July 2023. Reflecting on the experience, she revealed how she juggles parenting duties with her tennis career.

"My daughter didn’t want to sleep at night," Osaka shared. "It was stressful. I had to hold her for a while. I thought, 'Wow, she picked the perfect day not to go to sleep.' But moments like that are so precious to me. I just hope I keep having more."

Though the road back to the top hasn't been easy, Osaka has embraced the challenges, both on and off the court, with renewed determination.
