National Security Advisor Ajit Doval will embark on a two-day visit to France starting Monday, with the Rafale deal as a key agenda item during discussions with French officials, according to defense sources.
This meeting follows France's submission of a final detailed offer for the Rafale deal during recent negotiations in New Delhi. Indian officials are eager to finalize the negotiations and complete the contract by the end of the current fiscal year.
The Rafale project is crucial for the Indian Navy's fighter aircraft fleet, aiming to complement its existing Russian-made MiG-29K fighters. If the deal is finalized, the Rafale Marine jets produced by Dassault Aviation will replace the currently deployed MiG-29s, marking India's second significant acquisition of fighter jets from a French defense manufacturer in recent years.
The proposed procurement includes 22 single-seater Rafale Marine aircraft and four twin-seater trainer versions. The discussions come at a critical time, as the Indian Navy faces a shortage of aircraft and submarines, highlighting the urgency of fulfilling its operational needs.
The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has already approved the purchase, setting the stage for a substantial enhancement of India's naval capabilities. Additionally, India and France are exploring opportunities to incorporate more Make in India elements into the current order, aligning with India's goals to develop its domestic aircraft manufacturing industry.
