NDA Secures Rajya Sabha Majority with Unopposed By-Poll Victories
The NDA achieves a majority in the Rajya Sabha as nine BJP members and two allies win unopposed in by-polls, enhancing the ruling coalition’s legislative power
27-08-2024The ruling NDA has reached a majority in the Rajya Sabha following the unopposed election of nine BJP members and two allies in recent by-polls. This increase in BJP's strength to 96 elevates the NDA's total to 112 seats in the upper house. Additionally, one member from the Congress was also elected, raising the Opposition's count to 85.
The Rajya Sabha, with a full strength of 245 seats, currently has eight vacancies: four from Jammu and Kashmir and four nominated seats. With 237 members present, the majority threshold stands at 119.
Among the BJP candidates elected unopposed are Mission Ranjan Dass and Rameshwar Teli from Assam, Manan Kumar Mishra from Bihar, Kiran Chadhary from Haryana, George Kurien from Madhya Pradesh, Dhirya Sheel Patil from Maharashtra, Mamata Mohanta from Odisha, Ravneet Singh Bittu from Rajasthan, and Rajeev Bhattacharjee from Tripura.
Congress's Abhishek Manu Singhvi was elected from Telangana. NCP Ajit Pawar faction's Nitin Patil won from Maharashtra, and RLM's Upendra Kushwaha was elected from Bihar.
Securing a majority in the Rajya Sabha—a goal the NDA has pursued for a decade—is expected to facilitate smoother passage of contentious bills. Historically, significant Opposition numbers often obstructed government legislation, but with changes in political support and key allies losing power, the NDA now faces fewer hurdles in advancing its legislative agenda.
