Newly-Constructed Bridge Collapses in Bihar's Araria, No Injuries Reported
An under-construction bridge over the Bakra River in Bihar's Araria district collapsed today, prompting demands for an investigation into construction negligence
18-06-2024An under-construction bridge over the Bakra River in Bihar's Araria district collapsed today, just seconds after a portion of the concrete structure tilted and fell. The bridge, which cost ₹12 crore to build, was intended to improve connectivity between Kursakanta and Sikti.
Footage of the incident shows the bridge tipping to one side before crashing into the fast-flowing river below. Onlookers gathered at the riverbank, capturing the moment of the collapse on their phones. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
Sikti MLA Vijay Kumar attributed the collapse to the negligence of the construction company's owner, calling for a thorough investigation by the administration. As the bridge came apart, bystanders rushed to safety, with some standing perilously close to the remaining structure and others seeking shelter beneath it.
While the section of the bridge over the river was destroyed, the parts on the banks of the Bakra River remain intact. This incident is the latest in a series of bridge collapses in Bihar. In March, an under-construction bridge in Supaul collapsed, resulting in one fatality and several individuals trapped. Built at a cost of ₹984 crore over the Kosi River, the collapse led to chaos and urgent rescue operations.
The recent collapse is reminiscent of another incident in Bhagalpur, which had previously sparked a political controversy between the state government and the opposition BJP.
