Omar Abdullah on Wednesday declined to cut a ribbon styled like the Indian national flag during the launch of a government programme in Jammu and Kashmir, saying such symbolism should not be used in that manner.
The Chief Minister had been invited as the chief guest at the inauguration of the Union Territory’s “Know Your Artisan” initiative. When asked to formally open the event by cutting a ribbon designed in the colours of the tricolour, Abdullah objected. He requested organisers to remove it and was later seen carefully untying the ribbon himself with their assistance.
A video capturing the moment quickly circulated on social media, drawing widespread praise. Many users commended his decision, describing it as a principled gesture that upheld the dignity of the national flag. Some others criticised the organisers for incorporating a tricolour-themed ribbon into an official function in the first place.
One user on X remarked that genuine respect is reflected through conscience rather than ceremony, applauding Abdullah for prioritising values over spectacle.
About the ‘Know Your Artisan’ Initiative
The “Know Your Artisan” programme is part of the Jammu and Kashmir government’s broader ‘Soulful Kashmir’ campaign, aimed at revitalising and promoting the region’s traditional crafts and handloom sectors.
According to posts from the Chief Minister’s Office, Abdullah unveiled a series of measures to strengthen the handicrafts ecosystem. These include modern testing facilities, advanced fibre analysis systems, new design software tools, digital display installations, and a comprehensive branding strategy to boost the authenticity and global visibility of Kashmiri craftsmanship.
During the event, Abdullah also inaugurated a Geographical Indication (GI) testing laboratory and large LED display walls. High-precision fibre testing equipment and the DesignNWeave software developed by the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology were formally launched as well.
Additionally, he reviewed the handicrafts and handloom department’s new “Try Your Hands” segment, designed to offer visitors an interactive experience. The initiative features live demonstrations that allow tourists and residents to better understand the intricate processes and skill involved in producing Kashmir’s renowned artisanal products.
The episode involving the tricolour ribbon, however, became the highlight of the day, sparking conversations about symbolism, protocol and respect for national emblems.
