Over 150 Hostages Freed as Pakistan Train Hijacking Operation Kills 27 Militants
Militants have hijacked the Jaffar Express in Balochistan, holding hundreds hostage as security forces launch a major rescue operation
12-03-2025A dramatic hostage situation is unfolding in Pakistan's Balochistan province after militants hijacked a passenger train, taking hundreds of people captive. Security forces have launched an extensive rescue mission to free those held by the insurgents.
The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist group advocating for Balochistan’s independence, has claimed responsibility for seizing the Jaffar Express. The train, which was traveling from Quetta to Peshawar, came under attack on Tuesday as it passed through the Mashkaf tunnel in the rugged Gudalar and Piru Kunri region.
As of Wednesday morning, authorities have managed to rescue at least 155 passengers, while 27 militants were killed in the ongoing security operation. However, the BLA asserts that it still holds 214 hostages and has allegedly killed 30 security personnel—figures yet to be independently verified by the Pakistani government. The group has also threatened to start executing captives if their demands are not met, according to reports from Reuters.
The attack began when militants fired on the train, which was carrying 425 passengers in nine carriages. The insurgents first detonated explosives on the railway tracks, forcing the train to stop before taking control of it in the remote region.
Senior police official Rana Dilawar confirmed that as of Wednesday, the train remains stationary, with armed insurgents still holding hostages. Reinforcements, including helicopters and additional security personnel, have been deployed to counter the threat.
The BLA has issued a 48-hour ultimatum, demanding the release of political prisoners, activists, and individuals allegedly detained by the military. They have warned of dire consequences, including the execution of hostages and the complete destruction of the train, if their conditions are not met.
A security source disclosed that of the 425 passengers, 80 were military personnel. Another report indicated that 17 of the 104 rescued individuals had sustained injuries and were receiving medical treatment. Meanwhile, Pakistan Railways has established emergency response desks at both the Quetta and Peshawar railway stations, where anxious relatives await updates on their loved ones.
The attack comes just months after Pakistan Railways reinstated services on the Quetta-Peshawar route following a two-month suspension.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the incident, vowing that security forces were working diligently to neutralize the attackers. President Asif Ali Zardari echoed these sentiments, denouncing the violence against civilians and describing it as an affront to Balochistan’s cultural values. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi labeled the perpetrators as "beasts" who do not deserve leniency.
Hospitals in the region have been placed on high alert, with emergency measures activated at Sibi Hospital and Civil Hospital Quetta. According to Health Department spokesperson Waseem Baig, all medical personnel have been summoned to handle the crisis.
This incident adds to the growing instability in Balochistan, which has seen a surge in militant activity over the past year. In November 2024, a suicide bombing at Quetta Railway Station claimed the lives of 26 people and left 62 others injured, underscoring the persistent security challenges in the region.
