A six-year-old kindergarten student was left critically injured after an eight-year-old boy allegedly attacked her with stones and a flower pot inside a classroom at Sanskriti Model School in Panchkula, Haryana, on October 28. Police have launched an investigation, while the state government has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
The assault was captured on classroom footage that showed the older child repeatedly attacking the girl. According to the account of the incident, he dragged her into the classroom, struck her head against a desk twice, threw her to the floor and kicked her before hitting her with stones and a flower pot.
The girl lost consciousness during the attack and was left lying in a pool of blood. The boy allegedly continued dragging and kicking her before leaving the classroom after approximately a minute and a half.
When the girl's parents arrived at the school to collect her, the boy reportedly led them to the classroom and told them, “Aapki bacchi yaha padi hai” — meaning, “Your daughter is lying here.”
Girl shifted to PGI Chandigarh after initial treatment
The family rushed the injured child to the Civil Hospital in Sector 6, Panchkula, where she received initial medical attention. Given the severity of her injuries, doctors referred her to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh.
The girl was reported to be in serious condition.
Police have begun questioning the accused boy's parents as part of their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the assault. Authorities are seeking to establish what led to the incident and whether there were earlier warning signs that required intervention.
Family alleges earlier aggressive behaviour
The girl's uncle claimed that the attack followed an argument in which she allegedly told the boy she would complain about his behaviour to the teachers.
He further alleged that the boy had displayed aggression on previous occasions and said complaints had been made against him, including allegations that he had hit dogs.
These claims are part of the account provided by the victim's family and have not been independently established as findings of the police investigation.
The incident has raised concerns about supervision inside school premises, the handling of repeated behavioural complaints and the safeguards available to protect young children during school hours.
Haryana government orders probe
Haryana Education Minister Mahipal Dhanda has constituted a committee to investigate the incident. He said the government was treating the matter seriously and that action would be taken against anyone found responsible for negligence.
The minister stressed that children's safety could not be compromised and assured the family that appropriate steps would follow the inquiry.
The investigation is expected to examine the circumstances of the assault and the school's response, including whether adequate supervision and safety procedures were in place.
