The Lok Sabha is set to conduct a comprehensive discussion on Operation Sindoor — India’s strategic military retaliation following the Pahalgam terror strike — on Monday, July 28, during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed that the Business Advisory Committee has decided to prioritise the Operation Sindoor debate, following strong demands from Opposition parties, particularly the Congress, who had earlier written to the Centre calling for a focused conversation on the matter before the Monsoon Session commenced.

What to Expect from the Parliamentary Debate on Operation Sindoor

  • Timing and Format: The Lok Sabha will deliberate on Operation Sindoor for a full 16 hours on Monday. A parallel 16-hour session is scheduled for the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

  • Government Speakers: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to open the discussion, as per reports by PTI. Prominent cabinet ministers including Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and BJP leaders like Anurag Thakur and Nishikant Dubey are also likely to address the House.

  • Prime Minister’s Possible Role: While not officially confirmed, there is speculation that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may use this high-stakes debate as an opportunity to target the Opposition.

  • Opposition Voices: Key Opposition leaders such as Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Congress MPs Gaurav Gogoi and Manish Tewari, Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav, NCP’s Supriya Sule, and TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee will represent their parties during the discussion.

  • Regional Parties’ Participation: The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has been given 30 minutes to speak, with MPs Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu and GM Harish Balayogi likely to take the floor.

  • Ceasefire Controversy: The Opposition may push the government for answers regarding former U.S. President Donald Trump’s claims of having mediated a ceasefire between India and Pakistan — a point they’ve flagged previously.

  • Opposition Coordination: Ahead of the debate, floor leaders from the INDIA bloc are set to meet at 10 am on Monday to finalize their joint strategy for the session’s second week.

  • Government’s Appeal for Order: Minister Rijiju has urged Opposition MPs not to disrupt proceedings, highlighting how the first week of the session was affected by repeated adjournments. “When Parliament doesn’t run, it’s a loss for the nation,” he stated.

  • Delegation Members to Speak: NDA MPs who were part of international delegations promoting India’s stance on Operation Sindoor are also expected to contribute to the debate.

The debate on Operation Sindoor marks a crucial moment in Parliament, with both sides gearing up to present their narratives on India’s security posture and foreign policy in response to cross-border terror.
