11-02-2025Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the AI Summit in Paris on Tuesday, emphasized the need for democratic and accessible artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, along with unbiased data sets, to drive global innovation and cooperation. He underscored AI's transformative impact on governance, economy, security, and society, calling for responsible and inclusive technological governance.
"AI is shaping our world at an unprecedented scale and speed. It is the defining code for humanity in this century, evolving and being adopted faster than any previous technological milestone," PM Modi stated.
Highlighting AI’s cross-border implications, the Prime Minister stressed the necessity of international collaboration to establish governance frameworks that reflect shared values, mitigate risks, and foster trust. "Governance should not merely focus on managing risks but also on encouraging innovation for global welfare. Open discussions on AI’s potential and regulation are crucial," he said.
He further emphasized the need for equitable access to AI, particularly in the Global South, where resources such as talent, data, and infrastructure are limited. "AI can be a game-changer for sectors like healthcare, education, and agriculture, accelerating progress toward sustainable development goals," he added.
PM Modi highlighted India’s efforts in developing its own large language model tailored to its linguistic and cultural diversity. He also pointed out the country's unique public-private partnership model for pooling resources like computing power, ensuring AI development is inclusive and transparent.
"We must create open-source systems that enhance trust and transparency while ensuring data sets remain free from biases," he asserted.
French President Emmanuel Macron, who spoke before PM Modi, urged Europe to streamline regulations to enable AI growth in the region. Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance cautioned against excessive regulation that could stifle the industry, adding that AI must remain free from ideological bias.
"AI will enhance productivity but can never replace human beings," Vance remarked, echoing PM Modi's emphasis on human-centric AI development.
The AI Summit brought together global leaders, policymakers, and industry experts to discuss the future of artificial intelligence, reinforcing India's role in shaping AI governance and innovation on a global scale.
