Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need for peace and stability along the India-China border during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia. This marked their first formal discussion in five years.

In the meeting, PM Modi underscored that maintaining peaceful borders is vital for both nations, highlighting that their relationship impacts not only regional stability but also global peace. He added that "mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity" should guide future relations between India and China.

The two leaders last met in 2019 at the historic Panch Ratha monument in Mamallapuram, Tamil Nadu.

The discussion comes on the heels of a significant breakthrough in border negotiations, with India and China agreeing to resume patrolling at key locations along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh. This agreement is expected to ease tensions that have persisted since the deadly 2020 Galwan Valley clashes, which plunged relations to their lowest point in decades.

Key Takeaways from Modi-Xi Meeting

Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of resolving differences and disputes without letting them disrupt peace along the border. He reiterated that India-China relations are crucial for both countries’ citizens and for global stability. In a tweet after the meeting, he expressed optimism for bilateral ties, stressing that trust, respect, and sensitivity would shape their future.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that both leaders discussed stabilizing relations and making use of diplomatic channels to address issues. They agreed to enhance cooperation and ensure a positive impact on regional peace and global prosperity.

India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that PM Modi stressed the importance of not allowing border differences to escalate into conflict. The leaders also instructed special representatives on the boundary question to meet soon and work towards a resolution.

Xi Jinping's Call for Dialogue

President Xi echoed Modi’s sentiment, calling for increased communication and cooperation between the two nations to address differences. He noted that strengthening ties would contribute to both countries' development goals and bolster the unity of developing nations. Xi also highlighted their shared responsibility in promoting a multipolar world and greater democracy in international relations.
