PM Modi at NDA Parliamentary Meeting: Urges MPs to Avoid Rahul Gandhi's Conduct
Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized national service and proper conduct in his first address to NDA MPs during the inaugural session of his third term
02-07-2024Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) parliamentary party meeting on Tuesday, marking his first address to the MPs of the ruling bloc during the initial session of Parliament since beginning his third term in office.
In his address, Prime Minister Modi urged NDA MPs to avoid behavior similar to that of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha. Modi highlighted the historical significance of his achievement, noting that no prime minister, since Jawaharlal Nehru, has secured three consecutive terms. He referred to himself as a 'tea-seller' who reached this milestone, causing restlessness among some in the opposition.
This NDA meeting took place amid ongoing discussions in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on the Motion of Thanks to President Droupadi Murmu's address to a joint sitting of Parliament.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, briefing reporters after the meeting, shared the Prime Minister's key messages. Modi emphasized that MPs, regardless of their party affiliation, are elected to serve the nation, making national service their primary responsibility. He advised NDA MPs to represent their constituencies effectively within the House and to develop expertise in major national issues.
Additionally, Modi requested that every MP and their families visit the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya, an effort aimed at appreciating and learning from the contributions of each prime minister without political bias.
Union Minister and LJP (Ram Vilas) leader Chirag Paswan commented on the Prime Minister's guidance, especially in light of recent breaches in Parliamentary traditions, highlighting the value of Modi's experience.
Prime Minister Modi is also expected to address the discussions in both Houses later today. Official sources informed PTI that all BJP and allied party MPs were notified and urged to attend the meeting.
While Modi has previously addressed NDA MPs, particularly when elected as their leader, he typically speaks at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs' meetings during sessions. This meeting is particularly significant as the BJP, for the first time since 2014, has lost its majority in the Lok Sabha and now relies on its allies to sustain the government.
On Monday, the Lok Sabha was adjourned until 11 am on Tuesday. Controversy arose when Rahul Gandhi made remarks on Hinduism, prompting Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, to accuse Prime Minister Modi of delivering divisive speeches during the Lok Sabha elections.
During the debate on the motion of thanks on the President's address, Prime Minister Modi criticized Rahul Gandhi's comments, stating, "Calling the entire Hindu community violent is a very serious matter." Home Minister Amit Shah subsequently demanded an apology from Gandhi.
Both the BJP and Congress held press conferences, with the BJP denouncing Gandhi's remarks and Congress responding by criticizing the ruling party.
