Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the opening ceremony of the 26th Arabian Gulf Cup in Kuwait on Saturday, where he was the chief guest. During the event, he met with Kuwait’s Emir, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, as both leaders witnessed the highly anticipated football tournament.
Modi, who is in Kuwait for a two-day visit, was honored as the ‘Guest of Honour’ by the Emir, allowing for informal exchanges with the Kuwaiti leadership. The Prime Minister shared a photo with the Emir and expressed his pleasure in meeting him at the ceremony.
In his tweet, PM Modi also conveyed his best wishes to the participating teams, which include eight nations from the region, such as the GCC countries, Iraq, and Yemen.
This visit marks the first time in 43 years that an Indian Prime Minister has visited Kuwait. Earlier, Modi addressed a large gathering of the Indian community at the special ‘Hala Modi’ event in Kuwait City, where he praised the contributions of Indians abroad and highlighted India’s potential to become the "skill capital of the world."
In his address, Modi emphasized that India is well-equipped to meet the global demand for skilled professionals, and lauded the Indian community in Kuwait for blending India’s talent, technology, and traditions.
The Prime Minister also met with notable figures, including a 101-year-old former Indian Foreign Service officer, and two Kuwaiti nationals who have translated the Ramayana and Mahabharata into Arabic. Later, he visited a labor camp housing around 1,500 Indian workers.
PM Modi’s schedule also includes meetings with Kuwait’s Emir, Crown Prince, and Prime Minister on Sunday.
