Prime Minister Narendra Modi has commenced an official visit to Malaysia following an invitation from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, marking his first trip to the country since both nations upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in August 2024.
The visit comes as bilateral trade between India and Malaysia crossed approximately $15 billion last year, reflecting growing economic engagement. During high-level discussions scheduled in Putrajaya, the two leaders are expected to explore collaboration in key areas such as semiconductor manufacturing, clean and conventional energy, digital innovation, and food security.
A major highlight of the trip will be Modi’s interaction with Malaysia’s sizable Indian-origin population, estimated at around three million people. A large community event in Kuala Lumpur has been planned, featuring cultural performances, including a dance showcase involving around 1,000 participants, with an expected turnout of 15,000 to 18,000 attendees.
Ahead of the visit, Modi shared on social media that he looks forward to strengthening India–Malaysia relations across multiple sectors and reconnecting with the Indian diaspora, which plays a significant role in Malaysia’s social and economic fabric.
