Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday appealed to citizens to embrace frugality in response to mounting economic challenges linked to instability in West Asia. Speaking at an event in Vadodara, Gujarat, he highlighted the need to conserve resources, reduce foreign exchange outflow and adapt daily habits to cushion the country against global volatility.

The Prime Minister noted that the world has been navigating continuous disruption since the Covid-19 pandemic, with fresh uncertainty triggered by ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Rising crude oil prices and supply chain bottlenecks, he said, are exerting pressure on economies worldwide, including India.

Push for Fuel Conservation and Public Transport

Modi encouraged people to limit petrol and diesel consumption wherever possible. He suggested greater reliance on metro services, electric buses and other forms of public transport. Carpooling, he added, should become more common practice among private vehicle owners to reduce fuel usage.

He also reiterated the importance of embracing digital infrastructure to cut travel and operational costs. Virtual meetings and work-from-home arrangements, widely adopted during the pandemic, should continue to be prioritised in both government departments and private companies, he said.

Gold Imports and Foreign Exchange Concerns

Drawing attention to India’s substantial expenditure on gold imports, the Prime Minister asked citizens to consider postponing purchases of the precious metal until global conditions stabilise. He pointed out that significant foreign exchange reserves are spent each year on importing gold, which could otherwise be conserved during uncertain times.

Strengthening “Vocal for Local”

Modi renewed his call to promote the “Vocal for Local” initiative by choosing Indian-made goods over imported products. He emphasised that heavy reliance on overseas goods not only increases foreign exchange outflows but also exposes the country to supply chain disruptions and price fluctuations.

Rethinking Overseas Travel and Weddings

The Prime Minister also addressed the growing trend of foreign holidays and destination weddings abroad. He urged families to consider celebrating vacations and weddings within India, noting that international travel and overseas events result in substantial foreign currency spending.

As an example, he suggested that Gujarat’s Statue of Unity — dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel — could be developed as a preferred wedding destination with dedicated infrastructure.

Global Backdrop

The appeal comes amid escalating geopolitical tensions, particularly the prolonged standoff involving the United States and Iran. US President Donald Trump recently described Iran’s response to a proposed peace framework as unacceptable, signalling that diplomatic efforts remain fragile.

With global energy markets under strain and shipping routes facing disruptions, Modi’s message underscored the importance of collective discipline and domestic resilience to safeguard India’s economic stability.
