Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, highlighted the public's deep concern over crimes against women and urged state governments to prioritize women's safety. He emphasized the importance of swift investigations and harsh penalties to restore public confidence. His remarks followed widespread protests sparked by the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old woman doctor at a Kolkata hospital.

Expressing his anguish, PM Modi said, "We, as a society, must take serious note of the atrocities against women. The country is outraged, and I feel this anger. State governments and society must treat this issue with the utmost seriousness. It is crucial to conduct speedy investigations and deliver strict punishment to those responsible for such heinous acts to restore faith in the system."

The Prime Minister also stressed the need for more visibility in reporting punishments for crimes against women. "When individuals with such monstrous tendencies are punished, it often goes unnoticed in the media. We must bring these cases to light, so potential offenders understand that such crimes lead to severe consequences, including the death penalty," he added.

Earlier in the day, thousands of women from diverse backgrounds gathered across West Bengal in midnight protests, expressing their anger over the rape and murder of the doctor at RG Kar Medical College Hospital in Kolkata. The 'Reclaim the Night' protests have gained momentum, with demands for justice echoing throughout the state.

During these protests, unidentified individuals vandalized parts of the state-run medical college, further heightening tensions.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also announced her intention to protest, calling on the CBI, which has taken over the investigation, to ensure justice is served by the following Sunday.
