Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday extended heartfelt condolences and offered India’s support to Bangladesh after a devastating aircraft crash in Dhaka left one person dead and more than 100 injured, many of them schoolchildren.
The tragic incident occurred when a training aircraft belonging to the Bangladesh Air Force crashed into the Milestone School and College in the Uttara locality of the Bangladeshi capital during school hours, leading to widespread panic. Television visuals showed thick black smoke billowing from the building as flames engulfed the crash site. Emergency teams responded swiftly, dousing the flames and rushing the injured to hospitals.
The aircraft involved was a Chinese-origin F-7 jet, commonly used by the Bangladesh Air Force for pilot training. The crash caused significant damage to the school building and disrupted ongoing classes, contributing to the high number of student casualties.
In a message posted on X, Prime Minister Modi said, “Deeply shocked and saddened at the loss of lives, many of them young students, in a tragic air crash in Dhaka. Our hearts go out to the bereaved families. We pray for the swift recovery of those injured. India stands in solidarity with Bangladesh and is ready to extend all possible support and assistance.”
Authorities have yet to release the full number of students impacted, but initial reports confirm at least one fatality and injuries to more than a hundred individuals.
Speaking on the tragedy, Bangladesh's chief adviser Muhammad Yunus announced a formal inquiry into the cause of the crash. “The loss suffered by the Air Force, the students, their families, the teachers, and staff of Milestone School and College is immense. This is a deeply sorrowful moment for the entire nation,” he said.
The government has pledged all necessary assistance to the victims and their families as the investigation proceeds.
