Prime Minister Narendra Modi has conveyed his best wishes to Bangladesh on its National Day through a letter addressed to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus. In his message, he highlighted the historical importance of the 1971 Liberation War, emphasizing its role as the cornerstone of the deep and lasting bond between India and Bangladesh.
PM Modi reaffirmed India's commitment to strengthening relations with Bangladesh while stressing that the partnership should be built on mutual understanding and respect for each other’s interests and concerns.
“I extend my warm greetings to you and the people of Bangladesh on your National Day. This occasion stands as a reminder of our shared history and sacrifices, which have formed the bedrock of our bilateral ties. The spirit of Bangladesh’s Liberation War continues to inspire our relationship, which has expanded across various sectors, delivering real benefits to our people,” he stated.
He further added, “We remain dedicated to enhancing this partnership, guided by our common vision for peace, stability, and prosperity, and rooted in mutual sensitivity to each other’s priorities.”
President Droupadi Murmu also extended her congratulations to Bangladesh’s President, Mohammed Shahabuddin, reaffirming India’s steadfast support for a democratic and progressive Bangladesh.
“On behalf of the government and people of India, as well as my own, I extend heartfelt greetings and best wishes to Your Excellency and the friendly people of Bangladesh on your National Day,” Murmu expressed.
She further noted that India and Bangladesh share a multifaceted relationship, with cooperation spanning trade, connectivity, development initiatives, energy, education, skill-building, cultural exchanges, and interpersonal ties. “India remains committed to supporting a Bangladesh that is democratic, stable, inclusive, peaceful, and progressive,” she stated.
Observed annually on March 26, Bangladesh’s National Day commemorates the country’s 1971 declaration of independence from Pakistan. India was among the first nations to recognize Bangladesh’s sovereignty, following Bhutan, on December 6, 1971. In March 2021, Prime Minister Modi designated this date as India-Bangladesh Friendship Day (Moitree Diwas), underscoring the enduring ties between the two nations.
