During his three-day visit to the United States, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented President Joe Biden with a remarkable antique silver hand-engraved train model. This vintage piece, crafted by skilled artisans from Maharashtra, showcases the region's renowned silver craftsmanship.
Composed of 92.5% silver, the train model features intricate designs that reflect traditional Indian metalworking techniques, including engraving, repoussé, and delicate filigree. It pays homage to the steam locomotive era and symbolizes the historical significance of Indian railways. To enhance its symbolism of the strong India-US ties, the model is inscribed with "DELHI - DELAWARE" on the sides of the main carriage and "INDIAN RAILWAYS" on the engine in both English and Hindi, mirroring the labeling found on Indian passenger trains.
In addition to the train model, PM Modi gifted a Pashmina shawl to First Lady Jill Biden, beautifully presented in a handcrafted papier-mâché box. The Pashmina shawl is made from the fine winter coat of the Changthangi goat, native to Ladakh, and is known for its exceptional softness. The fibers are hand-combed and spun by artisans using traditional methods, with vibrant colors derived from natural dyes.
The packaging in papier-mâché boxes, also a product of Kashmiri craftsmanship, adds to the cultural significance of the gift. Each box is a unique piece of art, showcasing the rich heritage of the region.
PM Modi's visit to the US includes participation in the Quad Summit, where he and President Biden discussed enhancing US-India relations and addressing regional and global issues. In the coming days, Modi is set to meet other leaders, address the American-Indian community in New York, engage with American tech business leaders, and speak at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
