Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his first-ever podcast appearance with Zerodha founder Nikhil Kamath, underscored the value of mission-driven leadership in politics, drawing lessons from Mahatma Gandhi's life. PM Modi highlighted Gandhi's ability to unite people through authenticity and action, despite not being an exceptional orator.
“Gandhi never wore a cap himself, yet the world associates the 'Gandhi topi' with him. That’s the power of genuine communication and leadership,” PM Modi remarked, emphasizing the importance of connection and integrity in political leadership.
Qualities Needed for Political Success
When asked by Kamath about the qualities required to succeed in politics, PM Modi explained that entering politics is relatively easy, but achieving lasting success is a far greater challenge.
“Political success requires unwavering dedication, a strong connection with people during both good and challenging times, and the ability to collaborate as part of a team,” he noted. “If someone believes that their way is the only way or expects everyone to simply follow them, they might win a few elections, but they won’t emerge as true leaders.”
The Prime Minister also spoke about the need for humility and adaptability in leadership, stressing that politics demands a relentless commitment to public service rather than personal ambition.
Lessons from India's Freedom Struggle
Drawing a parallel between the pre- and post-Independence eras, PM Modi reflected on the diversity of contributions made during India’s struggle for freedom. He highlighted how people from various walks of life—educators, social workers, and tribal advocates—came together with a shared sense of patriotism.
“After Independence, many of these individuals transitioned into politics, bringing with them a deep sense of purpose and maturity,” PM Modi said. “This kind of mission-driven approach is essential even today.”
A Call for Youth in Politics
Addressing the participation of young people in politics, the Prime Minister said India needs at least one lakh dedicated young politicians who are driven by a selfless desire to serve the nation.
“Politics should not be about lena, pana, banana (taking, gaining, and making). Such an approach cannot sustain over time,” he cautioned.
Politics vs. Entrepreneurship
When asked to compare politics with entrepreneurship, PM Modi pointed out that while entrepreneurs work to build and grow their companies, politics revolves around putting the nation first. He emphasized that professional politicians with polished speeches might enjoy temporary relevance, but true leaders are those who prioritize national welfare over personal gains.
The Prime Minister concluded by reiterating the importance of authenticity, teamwork, and a mission-oriented mindset for anyone aspiring to enter politics. His conversation with Kamath offered a unique perspective on leadership and public service, inspiring young minds to contribute to nation-building with purpose and dedication.
