Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to make a historic visit to Poland today, marking the first trip by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in 45 years. This visit coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Poland. The last Indian Prime Minister to visit Poland was Morarji Desai in 1979.
In a statement before his departure, PM Modi said, "Leaving for Warsaw. This visit to Poland comes at a special time—marking 70 years of diplomatic ties between our nations. India cherishes its deep-rooted friendship with Poland, further strengthened by our shared commitment to democracy and pluralism."
During his two-day visit from August 21-22, PM Modi will engage in discussions with Polish President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Donald Tusk. He is also scheduled to address the Indian community at an event in Warsaw this evening. The visit aims to bolster bilateral relations, focusing on strategic partnerships, defense cooperation, and cultural exchanges.
European Parliament member Dariusz Jonski described the visit as "very important." The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted the historical ties between the two countries, including Poland’s support during Operation Ganga in 2022, which helped evacuate over 4,000 Indian students from Ukraine. Additionally, Poland's historical refuge for over 6,000 Polish women and children in India during World War II is viewed as a cornerstone of the strong India-Poland relationship.
Following his visit to Poland, PM Modi will travel to Kyiv on August 23 to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
