PM Modi is in Brazil as part of his five-day visit to Nigeria, Brazil, and Guyana, which began on November 16. His stop in Brazil follows a productive visit to Nigeria. Upon his arrival in Rio de Janeiro, he was greeted warmly by the Indian community, who welcomed him with Sanskrit chants. Expressing his appreciation, PM Modi shared on X, "Deeply touched by the warm and lively welcome from the Indian community upon arriving in Rio de Janeiro. Their energy reflects the affection that binds us across continents."
This marks PM Modi's third visit to Brazil, following the BRICS summits in 2014 and 2019. India hosted the G20 Summit in New Delhi last year, where it made significant diplomatic strides, including fostering global consensus on the Russia-Ukraine conflict and securing the inclusion of the African Union into the G20.
This year's G20 Summit in Brazil carries the theme "Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet," focusing on social inclusion, poverty alleviation, sustainable development, and global governance reforms. PM Modi emphasized that Brazil's G20 priorities build on the work India started in 2023, particularly the vision of "One Earth, One Family, One Future."
Before leaving Nigeria, PM Modi expressed his anticipation for discussions on furthering bilateral cooperation with various world leaders. He also highlighted the importance of the empowerment of women, a key issue raised at last year's New Delhi summit, which continues to be a focus of this year’s summit.
Following the G20 meeting, PM Modi will visit Guyana from November 19 to 21, at the invitation of President Mohamed Irfaan Ali. This trip marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Guyana in over 50 years.
