During a historic visit to Kyiv, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that the only solution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine lies in "dialogue and diplomacy," offering to mediate as a friend to bring about peace. "India is not neutral in this war; we are on the side of peace," PM Modi asserted during a joint statement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

This statement comes after PM Modi's recent visit to Russia, where his interaction with President Vladimir Putin sparked criticism from the West and President Zelenskyy, who called it a "huge disappointment" for peace efforts.

"The path to peace can only be forged through talks, and both sides need to engage in dialogue without delay," PM Modi said, urging Ukraine and Russia to come to the negotiating table. He also offered India's support, saying, "If I can contribute personally to peace, I will do so, as a friend."

President Zelenskyy echoed the importance of peace in his remarks, stating that achieving a just resolution to the war is Ukraine's top priority.

Earlier, PM Modi met with President Zelenskyy in Kyiv, where they exchanged a warm handshake and embrace. As they toured a war memorial, PM Modi kept his hand on Zelenskyy’s shoulder, symbolizing India's solidarity with Ukraine.

During his visit, PM Modi invited President Zelenskyy to visit India, an invitation confirmed by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. Jaishankar called the visit "landmark," marking the first time an Indian Prime Minister has visited Ukraine since its independence in 1991.

The discussions between PM Modi and President Zelenskyy covered various critical topics, including defense, trade, and agriculture, with a strong focus on the conflict in Ukraine. According to Jaishankar, the majority of their conversation revolved around the ongoing military situation, possible paths to peace, and resolving the crisis. He also noted Ukraine's interest in continued Indian involvement in future peace efforts.

In a gesture of humanitarian support, India delivered 22 tonnes of medical aid to Ukraine, underlining its commitment to assisting the country during the conflict. The talks also touched on India's energy trade with Russia, a topic of global interest as India navigates its relationships with both Ukraine and Russia amid the war.

Jaishankar described the discussions as "detailed, open, and constructive," signaling a positive exchange between the two leaders.
