Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, where the two leaders were seen embracing in a video shared online.
During the meeting, PM Modi expressed concern over the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the escalating security situation in the region. He reiterated India's steadfast support for the Palestinian people, emphasizing the importance of continued humanitarian aid. The Prime Minister underscored that a two-state solution is essential for achieving lasting peace and stability in the Middle East. Reflecting on India's early recognition of Palestine, he affirmed India's ongoing support for Palestine’s membership in the United Nations.
PM Modi shared images of his meeting with President Abbas on his X account, stating, "Exchanged views on further strengthening the long-standing friendship with the people of Palestine."
India had earlier provided its first installment of humanitarian aid to Gaza in July, contributing $2.5 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).
In addition to his talks with President Abbas, PM Modi held bilateral meetings with Nepal's Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Kuwait's Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, marking the first encounter between Modi and the Kuwaiti leader.
PM Modi also addressed the Indian diaspora in New York and led a roundtable discussion with leading American tech executives. His New York visit followed his participation in the Quad Summit, hosted by U.S. President Joe Biden in Wilmington, Delaware.
