Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday mounted a strong political offensive against the Trinamool Congress regime in West Bengal, claiming that concerns over the security of women have reached alarming levels in the state. Speaking at an election rally in Singur, he appealed to citizens to choose the BJP in the forthcoming polls to ensure that incidents similar to Sandeshkhali and the RG Kar hospital tragedy are not repeated.
The Prime Minister alleged that governance in Bengal has declined under the current dispensation, affecting both public safety and the education sector. He charged that criminal networks and corruption have infiltrated institutions, leaving students and women vulnerable. “Daughters are not secure here, and even the education system is being controlled by vested interests,” he told the gathering.
Modi urged the electorate to use their vote as an instrument of change. “A single vote for the BJP will help prevent violence against women on campuses, stop a repeat of Sandeshkhali, and ensure that teachers are not stripped of their jobs again,” he said, referring to past controversies in the state.
The Prime Minister’s remarks alluded to allegations that emerged from Sandeshkhali in early 2024, where local residents accused influential leaders of exploitation and land grabbing. The RG Kar hospital case of August 2024, involving the rape and murder of a young doctor, was also cited as an example of deteriorating law and order that triggered nationwide outrage.
Calling for an end to what he described as “jungle raj,” Modi invoked the legacy of social reformer Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and said the women and youth of Bengal must lead a new movement for transformation.
Expanding his criticism, the Prime Minister accused the state government of compromising national interests for political gains. He alleged that infiltration from across the border was being ignored and that the administration was reluctant to provide land for fencing projects. According to him, such negligence enables illegal entrants to obtain forged identity documents.
Pitching the benefits of a BJP-led “double-engine” government, Modi claimed that states governed by his party have shown faster progress. He cited Tripura’s rise in tap water coverage as an example and accused Bengal of blocking initiatives such as PM SHRI schools and fisheries welfare schemes.
He also highlighted the Centre’s efforts to honour Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, asserting that previous governments had ignored his contributions. The Prime Minister concluded by urging voters to support the BJP for better governance, development and security across the state.
