Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Jammu and Kashmir on Monday to inaugurate the strategically significant Sonamarg Tunnel, also known as the Z-Morh Tunnel, in the Ganderbal district. The 6.5-kilometer-long tunnel will provide year-round connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg, enabling the development of Sonamarg as a winter sports destination.

PM Modi will arrive at the site at 11:45 am, accompanied by Jammu and Kashmir's Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, among other dignitaries. Following the inauguration, PM Modi will address a public rally and interact with workers who contributed to the tunnel’s construction.

Enhanced Connectivity and Tourism Potential

The Sonamarg Tunnel, constructed at an altitude of over 8,650 feet above sea level, is part of a larger project costing ₹2,700 crore. It includes the main 6.4-kilometer-long tunnel, an egress tunnel, and approach roads, collectively aimed at providing all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg. This will bypass landslide-prone and avalanche-prone routes, ensuring uninterrupted access to the strategically vital Ladakh region.

Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah highlighted the tunnel's significance for Sonamarg’s tourism and economic growth. “The tunnel will allow us to develop Sonamarg into a winter sports destination, similar to Gulmarg. This will boost tourism and create opportunities for locals, including ski guides, instructors, sledge operators, and small businesses,” Abdullah said.

Boost to Economy and Defence Logistics

The tunnel is expected to unlock the region's trade and tourism potential while enhancing connectivity for local residents and travelers. Additionally, it will improve defence logistics and facilitate socio-economic integration between Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Along with the Zojila Tunnel, slated for completion by 2028, the Sonamarg Tunnel will ensure seamless connectivity on NH-1, linking Srinagar to Leh.

Security Arrangements in Place

Ahead of the Prime Minister's visit, security forces have intensified sanitization and area domination exercises in Kashmir. Extensive searches, patrols, and security measures involving the Jammu and Kashmir Police, paramilitary forces, and the Army are being carried out to ensure the event proceeds smoothly.

PM Modi Expresses Excitement

Reacting to visuals of the picturesque Sonamarg Tunnel shared by Omar Abdullah on social media, PM Modi expressed his enthusiasm for the visit. “I am eagerly awaiting my visit to Sonamarg for the tunnel inauguration. The benefits for tourism and the local economy are immense. Also, the aerial views are breathtaking,” PM Modi wrote.

Nestled in the snow-capped Himalayas, the Sonamarg Tunnel marks a significant milestone in regional infrastructure development, with far-reaching benefits for tourism, trade, and connectivity in the region.
