Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday visited Kerala’s Wayanad district, where a catastrophic landslide claimed over 400 lives and left many others injured. During his visit to the Chooralmala area, PM Modi conducted an aerial survey and personally inspected relief efforts, including visiting camps housing survivors and a hospital where injured victims are receiving treatment.

Following his inspection, PM Modi described the landslide as an "unprecedented disaster" and pledged comprehensive support for rehabilitation and reconstruction in the region.

"Since learning of this tragedy, I have been closely monitoring the situation. Central government agencies were mobilized immediately to assist in the relief efforts. This disaster is unlike any other—thousands of families have been devastated. I have witnessed the situation firsthand and met with those affected at the relief camps, as well as the injured in the hospital," PM Modi stated.

He was accompanied by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Governor Arif Muhammed Khan, and Union Minister Suresh Gopi, who briefed him on the severity of the disaster that struck on July 30.

The Prime Minister walked through Chooralmala, surveying the destruction, including the remains of the Vellarmala Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, which was obliterated in the landslide. He also crossed a 190-foot-long Bailey bridge constructed by the army after the disaster and spoke with Army personnel on-site.

At a relief camp in Meppadi, PM Modi spent nearly half an hour interacting with survivors, including two children who lost their entire families in the disaster. The survivors shared their harrowing experiences, with some breaking down in tears as the Prime Minister offered his condolences.

Before his ground visit, PM Modi's aerial survey covered the landslide’s origin and the most severely impacted areas, including Punchirimattam, Mundakkai, and Chooralmala.

Concluding his visit, PM Modi held a review meeting at the Wayanad collectorate to assess the situation further. The state government is urging the central government to classify the landslide as a Level 3 disaster under the National Disaster Management Plan, which would unlock additional central resources for rebuilding and rehabilitation efforts.
