Jan Suraj Party chief and former election strategist Prashant Kishor has come out in support of stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra, who is facing backlash over his remarks on Eknath Shinde. Kishor dismissed allegations that Kamra had political motives behind his statements, asserting that the comedian is not involved in politics.
"Kunal Kamra is my friend," Kishor said, acknowledging the controversy sparked by Kamra’s words. "But from what I know of him, he has no hidden agenda. Those who think he is engaging in politics are mistaken. He wouldn’t do such a thing."
Kishor further shared that Kamra resides in Puducherry, where he practices organic farming while pursuing stand-up comedy as a passion. "He has no political enmity. He is someone who deeply loves his country. Perhaps he used the wrong words, and if that is the case, legal proceedings should take their course. However, I can confidently say that he respects the country and its Constitution," Kishor remarked.
Kamra has been at the center of a storm since his controversial "gaddar" (traitor) remark about Shinde. The fallout has led to multiple police complaints, threats from right-wing groups, and even vandalism at the venue where his show took place. Political figures, including Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, have criticized his remarks.
The Madras High Court granted Kamra interim anticipatory bail on Friday in relation to the multiple FIRs filed against him.
Despite the uproar, Kamra has remained defiant, refusing to retract his statements. In a recent post on X, he declared he would not bow to intimidation. "I do not fear this mob, nor will I hide under my bed. As far as I know, poking fun at our leaders and the political circus is not against the law," he wrote.
