On Wednesday, President Joe Biden addressed the nation for the first time since withdrawing from the presidential race, announcing that he is "passing the torch to a new generation" to help unify the country. The 81-year-old president emphasized the importance of younger voices in leadership, explaining his decision to end his re-election bid and urging voters to defend democracy.

"I have decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. That is the best way to unite our nation," Biden stated. He framed his decision as a necessary step to protect democracy, though he did not mention Republican candidate Donald Trump by name, whom he has frequently labeled a threat to democratic values.

"I revere this office, but I love my country more. It's been the honor of my life to serve as your President. But in defense of democracy, which is at stake, it's more important than any title," Biden declared.

Biden stressed that the effort to protect American democracy must be a unifying cause. "A cause of American democracy itself must unite to protect it...It's become clear to me that I need to unite my party in this critical endeavor. I believe my record as President, my leadership in the world, and my vision for America's future all merit a second term, but nothing, nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy," he continued.

Despite finding joy and strength in serving the American people, Biden underscored that the mission of improving the nation is about the citizens and their future, not about him. "It's about we, the people...I believe America is at an inflection point," he added.

On July 21, Biden announced his withdrawal from the presidential race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor. This decision came after a challenging debate against Donald Trump, during which Biden struggled to respond effectively. Following the debate, influential figures within the Democratic Party, including former President Barack Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, urged Biden to step aside, questioning his fitness for another term.

In his Oval Office address, Biden praised Kamala Harris as a strong and capable leader who can take on Trump in the upcoming election. "She's experienced, she's tough, she's capable. She's been an incredible partner to me and a leader for our country. Now the choice is up to you, the American people," he said. Biden highlighted the importance of both long-standing experience and the fresh perspectives brought by new voices in public life.
