On the eve of India’s 78th Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu delivered a powerful address to the nation, emphasizing the progress of democracy and the country’s commitment to building an inclusive social democracy.
President Murmu praised the government’s dedication to social justice, highlighting that the Narendra Modi administration has implemented unprecedented measures to support Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and other marginalized communities. "Social justice is a top priority for the government, with initiatives that prioritize the welfare of marginalized groups," she affirmed.
She also emphasized India’s strength in its diversity and plurality, which unites the nation and propels it forward. Drawing on the words of BR Ambedkar, President Murmu reiterated that "political democracy cannot endure without a strong foundation of social democracy." She pointed to the nation’s progress in political democracy as evidence of the strengthening of social democracy.
"The spirit of inclusion is evident in every aspect of our society," President Murmu said. "We advance as a united nation, celebrating our diversity and plurality. It is essential to reinforce affirmative action as a tool of inclusion, and we must reject any tendencies that promote discord based on perceived social hierarchies."
The President also outlined several key government initiatives aimed at uplifting marginalized groups, including the Pradhan Mantri Samajik Utthan evam Rozgar Adharit Jankalyan (PM-SURAJ), which provides direct financial assistance, and the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN), focused on improving the socio-economic conditions of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).
She highlighted the NAMASTE scheme, which aims to eradicate manual scavenging by ensuring that sanitation workers do not have to engage in hazardous tasks.
Additionally, President Murmu underscored the government’s commitment to women's welfare and empowerment, noting that budget allocations for these purposes have more than tripled in the last decade. This investment has resulted in increased female labor participation and an improved sex ratio at birth. She also mentioned the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam (Women Reservation Act) as a major step towards empowering women.
Acknowledging the vital role of farmers as "Annadata" (providers of food), President Murmu praised their contributions to making India self-reliant in agriculture. "Their efforts have been crucial in achieving agricultural self-sufficiency and ensuring food security for our population," she said.
She also highlighted significant advancements in infrastructure, including roads, railways, and ports, achieved through strategic planning and effective institutions. President Murmu expressed confidence in the country’s economic future, citing increased transparency in the banking and financial sectors as key drivers that could elevate India to the ranks of developed nations.
In her speech, President Murmu also reflected on the observance of Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas (Partition Horrors Remembrance Day), acknowledging the immense suffering and loss of life during the partition. "As we celebrate our Independence Day, we must remember the unparalleled tragedy of partition and stand in solidarity with those who were affected," she concluded.
