Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra made headlines on Monday when she arrived in Parliament carrying a bag featuring symbols associated with Palestine, including a watermelon — a recognized symbol of resistance in the region. The accessory quickly became a topic of discussion, highlighting her vocal support for the Palestinian cause.
A photograph of Gandhi with the bag was shared on social media by Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed, sparking both praise and criticism. BJP leader Sambit Patra took a jibe at the Congress leader, remarking, “The Gandhi family has always carried the bag of appeasement. This appeasement is why they are losing elections.”
Responding sharply to Patra’s comments, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, “Instead of making foolish statements, they [the BJP] should address the atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh. Let them talk to the Bangladesh government about this.”
Gandhi’s gesture comes shortly after she was seen wearing a black-and-white keffiyeh — a traditional Palestinian scarf — during a meeting with Abed Elrazeg Abu Jazer, the charge d'affaires at the Palestinian embassy. The meeting, held at her residence in Delhi, included discussions on India’s potential role in advocating for peace in Gaza and aiding reconstruction efforts in the conflict-hit region.
Priyanka Gandhi has consistently voiced her concerns over the Israel-Palestine conflict. In October last year, she accused Israel of violating international laws through its military actions in Gaza. She also criticized the Modi government for what she called a lack of effort in promoting peace.
Earlier this year, she condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's handling of the Gaza conflict, labeling it “barbaric” and urging global leaders to denounce Israel’s actions. In a social media post in July, she described Israel’s offensive in Gaza as “genocidal” and called on the international community to act.
The Congress leader’s recent election victory from Wayanad, a constituency in Kerala with a significant Muslim population, further underscored her advocacy for the Palestinian cause during her campaign. Her consistent criticism of Israel's policies and calls for a ceasefire in Gaza have drawn both admiration and scrutiny.
As the debate over her symbolic gesture unfolds, it has reignited discussions around India's role in addressing the Israel-Palestine conflict on the global stage.
