Radical Sikh Preacher Amritpal Singh Granted Parole to Take Oath as MP Amidst Controversy
Amritpal Singh, recently elected as MP from Khadoor Sahib and currently under NSC detention, granted parole to attend oath-taking ceremony in Delhi
03-07-2024Amritpal Singh, a radical Sikh preacher and the chief of 'Waris Punjab De', who recently won the Khadoor Sahib parliamentary seat in Punjab, is set to take oath as a Member of Parliament on July 5. Currently lodged in Assam's Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act along with nine associates, Amritpal Singh has been granted a four-day parole to facilitate his oath-taking ceremony, officials in Amritsar confirmed.
Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa, an Independent MP from Faridkot, shared that Amritpal Singh is scheduled to take oath in the private chamber of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Khalsa had personally met with the Speaker to discuss and finalize the arrangements for the oath-taking despite Singh's incarceration.
Regarding the parole, Ghamshyam Thori, the Deputy Commissioner-cum District Magistrate of Amritsar, stated, "Amritpal Singh has been granted parole for up to four days, starting from July 5, with specific conditions communicated to the Jail Superintendent in Dibrugarh." The decision for parole was authorized by the Home Department after a request was made under Section 15 of the National Security Act.
Rajdev Singh Khalsa, Amritpal Singh's lawyer who frequently visits him in jail, confirmed that Singh had recently written to the Amritsar Deputy Commissioner via the Dibrugarh jail superintendent, seeking necessary clearances from the state government to allow him to take oath as an MP.
Amritpal Singh's journey to Parliament was marked by his victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate from Khadoor Sahib constituency, where he defeated Congress nominee Kulbir Singh Zira by a substantial margin of 1,97,120 votes.
Known for his allegiance to the Khalistan movement and often likened to the slain militant leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, Amritpal Singh was arrested in April last year in Moga's Rode village following an intensive manhunt. Prior to his arrest, he evaded police capture in Jalandhar by changing vehicles and altering his appearance.
The Punjab Police had initiated action against Amritpal Singh and his supporters after a confrontation on February 23 last year in Ajnala. During the incident, Singh and his aides, armed with swords and guns, forcibly entered a police station on the outskirts of Amritsar, leading to clashes with law enforcement while demanding the release of Lovepreet Singh Toofan, one of his associates.
Amritpal Singh and his associates faced multiple charges including attempts to sow communal discord, attempted murder, assault on police personnel, and obstructing lawful duties of public servants.
Despite these legal challenges and his current incarceration, Amritpal Singh's upcoming oath-taking ceremony highlights the complexities of law and politics in Punjab, where issues of Sikh identity and autonomy remain significant in electoral discourse.
