Rajasthan Royals have confirmed the appointment of Rahul Dravid as their new head coach for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. Dravid, a former captain of the Royals, will assume his duties immediately and will be actively involved in preparations for the 2025 season, including the franchise’s strategy for the mega auction.

Dravid, who recently guided India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup, will return to the Rajasthan Royals for the first time since 2015. He previously captained the team in 2012 and 2013 before transitioning to a mentorship role in 2014 and 2015. After his time with the Royals, Dravid took on coaching roles with other teams, including the Delhi Capitals, and later led India’s U19 team to success.

This will be Dravid’s first major assignment since his tenure as head coach of the Indian men’s national team ended in July. He has already engaged in discussions with the Royals' management, including Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara, as the franchise plans for player retention and the upcoming auction later this year.

Dravid expressed his excitement about returning to a familiar environment. “I’m thrilled to be back at the Royals, a team I’ve always considered home. After the World Cup, this is the perfect next step for me, and I’m eager to help the team reach new heights,” Dravid said.

Kumar Sangakkara, who will continue as Director of Cricket for the franchise, welcomed Dravid's return, praising his coaching prowess. “Rahul is not only one of the greatest players of the game, but his coaching achievements over the last decade are remarkable. He has the ability to nurture talent and drive consistent performance, and we’re excited to see what he brings to the Royals,” Sangakkara said.

Jake Lush McCrum, CEO of the Royals Sports Group, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing Dravid’s impact on Indian cricket and his strong connection to the franchise. “Rahul’s influence on Indian cricket has been transformational, and we’re delighted to have him back with the Royals,” McCrum noted.

Rajasthan Royals have shown glimpses of resurgence in recent years, finishing as finalists in 2022 and securing third place in 2024 under the leadership of Sanju Samson. Dravid’s appointment is seen as a step towards building on this momentum and aiming for more consistent success in the IPL.
