Railway Worker Fatally Crushed During Engine Decoupling in Bihar
A railway employee lost his life in a shunting mishap at Barauni Junction, prompting an official investigation
09-11-2024A tragic incident occurred at Bihar’s Barauni Junction in Begusarai district, where a 35-year-old railway worker, Amar Kumar Raut, lost his life after being trapped between the engine and a coach during shunting operations.
The mishap happened on Saturday as Amar was decoupling the engine of the Lucknow-Barauni Express (Train No: 15204) following its arrival at Barauni Junction. During the decoupling process, the train’s driver unexpectedly reversed the engine, leading to Amar getting caught between the engine and the power car, causing him to die instantly.
Passengers quickly raised the alarm, prompting the driver to halt the engine. However, he fled the scene shortly after. A video from the incident shows Amar trapped between the train components while the train was stationed at platform number 5.
Senior officials from the Sonpur Railway Division arrived promptly, launching an inquiry into the incident. “This unfortunate accident should never happen in the workplace. We’ve initiated an officer-level inquiry and provided immediate funeral assistance to Amar’s family, with further compensation to follow according to service rules,” stated the DRM Sonpur. He assured that action would be taken against those responsible, alongside implementing safety measures upon the inquiry’s conclusion.
Railway officials also convened a meeting across departments at Barauni Junction to ensure stringent safety protocols are followed during train operations.
