Amid rising tensions over the ongoing Hindi-Marathi language controversy in Maharashtra, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray has ordered a strict gag on party members, directing them to refrain from speaking to the press or posting any statements on social media related to the issue.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Thackeray issued a firm message to his cadre, warning against any unapproved media interaction. He also instructed designated party spokespersons not to comment publicly without his prior clearance.
“A clear directive — no one from the party should give statements to newspapers, TV channels, or online platforms. Similarly, do not upload videos or reactions on social media. Even official spokespersons must consult me and seek permission before engaging with any form of media or posting anything,” he said in a Marathi-language post.
The directive comes amid a brewing clash between the MNS and Maharashtra’s ruling Mahayuti alliance, headed by the BJP, over the MNS’s aggressive campaign advocating greater use of Marathi in public life.
The language row escalated following viral footage showing MNS workers confronting and physically attacking a north Indian vendor for not speaking Marathi. The video drew widespread criticism and sparked political uproar across party lines.
Following the incident, Raj Thackeray reportedly told his workers to continue the campaign but to avoid filming such actions. “Hit them if necessary, but don’t record it,” he allegedly told his party workers, further fueling controversy.
The episode has ignited a fierce political debate in Maharashtra and beyond, with several leaders denouncing the violence. Nonetheless, the MNS stood firm, stating that any disrespect towards the Marathi language would be met with a strong response.
