Reliance Industries and Rolls-Royce are looking to collaborate on developing an indigenous combat aircraft engine for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme, alongside plans to explore a specialised aerospace propulsion facility in the country.

The proposed partnership is aimed at creating an Indian capability for the complete lifecycle of a fighter-engine programme.

Under the plan, the two companies would explore working together on the design, development, production and delivery of a combat engine intended for the AMCA.

Rolls-Royce would contribute its experience in advanced aircraft propulsion, while Reliance would bring its industrial, manufacturing and project-execution capabilities to the proposed collaboration.

The larger objective is to develop critical propulsion technology within India rather than depend entirely on capabilities developed overseas.

New aerospace propulsion facility also on the cards

Reliance and Rolls-Royce also intend to examine the possibility of establishing an Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India.

The proposed centre could become a hub for advanced power and propulsion technologies and support different stages of an engine programme.

The companies are looking at capabilities that would extend from engineering and development to manufacturing, testing, production and long-term support.

Such an ecosystem could potentially create a wider base for advanced aerospace-engine technology in India.

Anant Ambani stresses strategic independence

Reliance Executive Director Anant Ambani said building capabilities in critical technologies was important for India's strategic autonomy.

He said the proposed collaboration would bring together Rolls-Royce's experience in advanced propulsion with Reliance's technological capabilities, manufacturing scale and ability to execute large industrial projects.

According to Ambani, the partnership is intended to establish a lasting Indian capability in advanced propulsion and eventually help the country become more competitive globally in the sector.

Rolls-Royce brings propulsion expertise

Rolls-Royce CEO Tufan Erginbilgiç said the company sees the proposed collaboration as an opportunity to combine its long-standing engineering expertise with Reliance's industrial strengths.

The British company has extensive experience in developing aircraft engines and advanced propulsion systems.

The proposed partnership would therefore combine two different capabilities — Rolls-Royce's engine technology and Reliance's manufacturing and industrial infrastructure.

A wider opportunity for India's aerospace sector

The proposed AMCA collaboration could have implications beyond a single fighter programme.

Developing an indigenous combat-engine ecosystem would give India an opportunity to build expertise in advanced propulsion, an area that requires highly specialised technology, manufacturing capabilities and testing infrastructure.
