Reliance Jio has entered into a collaboration with SpaceX to introduce Starlink’s satellite internet service in India. However, the agreement is contingent upon SpaceX obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals to operate Starlink in the country. If approved, Jio plans to distribute Starlink services through its retail outlets and online platforms.

Mathew Oommen, Group CEO of Reliance Jio, emphasized the company’s commitment to expanding high-speed internet access across India. “Ensuring broadband connectivity for every Indian, regardless of location, is our priority. Partnering with SpaceX to bring Starlink here marks a significant step toward nationwide digital inclusion,” he stated.

He further noted that incorporating Starlink into Jio’s broadband framework would extend coverage and improve the reliability of internet services in the country, particularly in an era increasingly driven by artificial intelligence. This initiative aims to empower both businesses and communities with enhanced connectivity.

The primary goal of this partnership is to extend broadband access to underserved and remote areas. Jio, which manages the highest volume of mobile data traffic among Indian operators, will utilize Starlink’s satellite network to bolster its existing internet services. Additionally, Jio will oversee the setup, activation, and customer support for Starlink users, ensuring a seamless experience.

This collaboration aligns with Jio’s broader mission of making internet access widely available. With the addition of Starlink, Jio’s existing broadband services—JioFiber and JioAirFiber—will be complemented, enabling faster and more cost-effective coverage in hard-to-reach regions.

The announcement follows Airtel’s recent disclosure of its own partnership with SpaceX to offer Starlink services in India, intensifying competition in the satellite internet sector.

Both Jio and SpaceX are also exploring other potential avenues for collaboration to enhance India’s digital infrastructure.

Gwynne Shotwell, President and COO of SpaceX, commended Jio’s efforts to expand connectivity in India. “We appreciate Jio’s dedication to advancing digital access in India. We look forward to working together and securing the necessary government approvals to deliver Starlink’s high-speed internet to more individuals and businesses,” she said.
