The Kremlin has criticized the United States for what it describes as unlawful pressure on India regarding its oil trade with Russia. This comes after former US President Donald Trump issued a warning of possible tariff hikes on nations continuing to buy Russian energy.

Speaking to reporters, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, “We are witnessing several remarks that sound more like threats — efforts to coerce countries into cutting economic ties with Russia. These are not in line with international law.”

He emphasized that each country has the right to determine its own trade policies based on national interest, stating, “Sovereign nations are entitled to select their trade partners and define the terms of economic engagement according to what suits them best.”

On Friday, Trump had signaled fresh sanctions not only on Moscow but also on its trading allies, unless Russia took steps toward ending its military operation in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin, however, remains firm on his stance regarding the war.

India, which has been a significant buyer of Russian crude oil since the conflict began, responded strongly to Trump's warnings. Calling the threat of tariffs “unjustified,” Indian officials reaffirmed their commitment to defending the country's energy security and economic independence.

An official statement from New Delhi reminded critics that the US had initially supported India’s Russian oil purchases to stabilize global markets after the Ukraine crisis disrupted supply chains. Now, those same actions are being questioned.

India’s foreign ministry also pushed back against criticism from European countries, noting that several Western nations continue their own trade with Russia despite the war. “Our energy imports are driven by practical needs. It is ironic that countries with no such compulsions continue their dealings while faulting India,” the ministry stated.

Sources within the Indian government told Reuters that despite international pressure, India will maintain its current oil procurement strategy with Russia.
