Amid rising tensions with Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack and India's subsequent Operation Sindoor, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has bolstered the security cover for External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, government officials said.
A specially-equipped bulletproof vehicle has now been included in his convoy, and surveillance around his official residence in Delhi has been significantly tightened.
Jaishankar is already under Z-category protection, which is provided by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). A dedicated team of 33 commandos is tasked with his security, ensuring his safety at all times.
Z-category is the third-highest security level provided in India and typically includes 22 personnel, among them 4 to 6 NSG commandos, along with local police support. The cover includes a bulletproof car and escort vehicles, and is assigned to individuals considered at elevated risk, such as senior politicians and prominent public figures.
This is not the first time Jaishankar’s security has been escalated. In October 2023, the Intelligence Bureau’s threat analysis led to an upgrade from Y-category to Z-category protection. At that time, the revamped security detail included 12 armed guards posted at his home, six personal security officers (PSOs), 12 escort commandos across three shifts, three surveillance personnel, and a team of three trained drivers on duty around the clock.
The latest enhancement reflects growing security concerns tied to the volatile situation along India’s western border.
